How It Works:
Water softeners operate via ion exchange. The mineral tank contains negatively charged resin beads that attract positively charged hardness minerals like calcium and magnesium. As hard water passes through, these minerals attach to the beads, and sodium ions are released into the water. When the resin becomes saturated, the system regenerates using a brine solution to flush calcium, magnesium, and iron off the beads, restoring the resin’s effectiveness.

Sizing Your Softener:

• Water hardness is measured in grains per gallon (GPG), ppm, or mg/L. Convert ppm or mg/L to GPG by dividing by 17.1.

• Account for iron and manganese by multiplying their concentrations by 4 and adding to your hardness value.

Example for 4 People:

• Hardness: 10 GPG

• Iron: 2 ppm

• Daily Usage: 4 people × 75 gallons/person × (10 + 2×4) = 5,400 grains/day

• A 32,000 grain system with 20% reserve regenerates approximately every 5 days, which is optimal.

Usage Guidelines:

• Normal to low iron levels: regenerate every 5–10 days

• High iron (≥5 ppm) or manganese (≥1 ppm): regenerate every 3–5 days
