Overview:
This 5 lb mixture of KDF 85, Birm®, and Catalytic Carbon media is designed to fill one 20" Big Blue filter. Each media type provides specialized treatment to improve water quality in residential, commercial, and industrial filtration systems. Note: This item cannot be shipped to California.

Media Benefits

Birm® Media

• Can remove up to 99% of water-soluble lead, mercury, nickel, and chromium.

• Ideal for use in GAC beds, ion exchange resins, carbon block filters, and inline carbon filters.

Catalytic Carbon (CAC)

• High-activity granular activated carbon made from select coconut shell charcoal.

• Effective in removing chloramines and hydrogen sulfide.

• Large micropore volume removes low molecular weight organics and their chlorinated by-products (e.g., chloroform, THMs).

• Superior mechanical hardness and clean product with minimal dust.

• Alkalinity should exceed 2× the combined sulfate and chloride concentration.

• Maximum water temperature: 100°F / 38°C

• Water pH range: 6.8 – 9.0

• Dissolved Oxygen: ≥15% of iron content

• Bed depth: 30-36 in.

• Freeboard: ≥50% of bed depth

• Backwash rate: 10–12 gpm/sq. ft.

• Backwash bed expansion: 20–40% of bed depth

• Service flow rate: 3.5–5 gpm/sq. ft. (intermittent flow or favorable conditions may allow higher rates)

Limitations:

• Free chlorine: <0.5 ppm

• No oil or polyphosphates present
